An open access paper in Nature communications: http://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-02954-1 “Patterns of island change and persistence offer alternate adaptation pathways for atoll nations” is, I think, a bit more jargony than it perhaps needs to be. The main part of the paper is not especially technical and its overall message is clearly expressed, but there are a lot of unnecessary words. I’ve tried to rewrite some parts as an exercise to make it even clearer. I probably haven’t succeeded – and trampled haphazardly over any nuance and political sensibility in the process – but it was interesting to try and the result is a shorter text, if nothing else.
